David Putnam has spent over thirty years as a public school teacher teaching English, Language Arts, and writing in Shelby, North Carolina. He is currently a teacher at Crest High School where he teaches tenth and eleventh grade English and AP Language and Composition. Over his career as a teacher, he has taught elementary, middle school, and high school and has taught college courses in creative writing, research, and secondary education.
David spent almost fourteen years serving bi-vocationally as a youth minister/public school educator. He began his teaching career at Shelby Junior High School, and his other teaching assignments have included teaching at Crest Junior High School, Crest Middle School, and South Cleveland Elementary School before moving to his current assignment of twenty-one years at Crest High School. He has taught Expository Writing and Literature Based Research at Cleveland Community College and has also taught an education course at Gardner-Webb University. He has served two churches as youth minister. He first served at Elizabeth Baptist Church in Shelby, NC for eleven years and then at Boiling Springs Baptist Church in Boiling Springs, NC as interim youth minister for eighteen months. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in English and a Master’s Degree in Middle School/Elementary Education with a concentration in Communication Skills from Gardner-Webb University. He is certified to teach elementary grades four through eight Language Arts/Social Studies and high school English.
David enjoys writing fiction, and he also enjoys writing non-fiction essays. In addition to writing, he enjoys all kinds of music, classic cars, and cooking. He currently serves as a deacon at Elizabeth Baptist Church where he also plays guitar in the praise band and continues work as a volunteer in the youth program with “The Guys,” a mission organization for teenage boys. He is also the church historian and has a passion for helping others and guiding them into a relationship with Christ. He is a lifelong resident of Shelby, North Carolina and continues to live there today with his wife Jill and their son Carson.
